I am unable to play LOG2 because it does not respond to either my controller or keyboard. I can interact with various bits of menus, but there is no cursor to show where the mouse is. It's bizarre. I'm playing via Steam and using Windows 8. Please help!

I think you might be missing some libraries. LoG2 was made with DirectX 9c and some of these libraries might be missing in Windows 8. Normally the latest DirectX you have should be backwards compatible. But first try to run the game in Windows XP compatibility mode.

Reinstall direct-x first. They are inside the _CommonRedist folder inside you LoG2 installation folder.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately my attempts to act on your advice were thwarted - Windows 8 will not let me re-install and I don't know how to run the game in any compatibility mode. Don't get cranky with me - I'm a middle-aged woman (not a digital native). Blame my kids for persuading me to get hooked on gaming.

Did you try right-click -> Run as Administrator?

There are a whole bunch of things it could be. One more suggestion to try...

1. Right click on your windows desktop.
2. Select "Screen resolution".
3. Click on the blue text button that says "Make text and other items larger or smaller".
4. Slide the bar at the top right down to "Smaller".

If you have the text scaled up on your desktop (like on a Surface Pro for instance) this can sometimes cause problems with gaming.

Otherwise - if you could post a bit more information about your PC then we might be able to help a bit more. Is it a desktop or laptop? If it's a laptop - what model is it? etc.

There have been rare reports of the mouse cursor not showing up after game start for both LoG1 and LoG2. Some causes are enabled cursor trails inside the mouse driver, the Steam installer failing to run the DIrectX installer and/or the Visual C ++ Redistributable that come with the game or Windows wanting a reboot but not telling you.

You can re-run the delivered DX9/VC++ installers manually anytime from the "_CommonRedist" subfolder inside the game install folder
i.e. "Programs (x86)" -> "Steam" -> "steamapps" -> "common" -> "Legend of Grimrock 2 " -> "_CommonRedist"

I'm middle-aged too and I switched from Windows 7 to a Mac several years ago. It seems that Windows XP mode is no longer available under Windows 8

It seems you are mixing up stuff here. JanetCM uses Win8 - not Win7 - and she does not need to install anything. Any(!) windows since NT comes with the option and ability to run installed software inside an older windows version compatability mode. All you have to do for this is to right-click the application in question, select "Properties" from the menu, select "Combatability" tab and the windows version you want to be emulated.

Regarding Windows Virtual PC: I strongly advice anyone to NOT use this piece of junk!
If you ever need or want to run a virtual windows or other intel-based OS try Oracle VM VirtualBox or something similar

It seems you are mixing up stuff here. JanetCM uses Win8 - not Win7

I know she does, but I was correcting my first advice where I suggested to play in Win XP compatibility mode, something Win 8 no longer has but was still available in Win 7.
