I seem to remember someone figuring out a method of adding new skills to existing classes. Is there a standard way of doing this, and could anyone point me to some examples please?

Yes, considering I still haven't seen anything about a release date for LoG2, I like many others on this site will continue working with what I've got on LoG1 and worry about converting the dungeon if need be when the second one comes out.
