[SPOILERS] Gold keys and treasure - a question...

Just wondering...
On floor 3 you can get a gold key from killing spiders, and use it at the end of the floor to obtain a Knoffer Mace and Ring Boots.
Can you save this key for the later treasure rooms and use it there? I'd guess that you could...most keys of a certain type seem to be usable in any lock of that type, it's just that most of the time the game forces you to use them. This one, you don't have to use. And in a party with nothing but rogues and mages, you have no use for the rewards behind this door...heck, even a party with a warrior might not want these items.
