(noob question) How do i use skills?

like i got slash for my warrior now im wondering how to use it, or if its just automatic

it is random, and I think you get more of a chance of the better attack as your skill goes up.

it flashed up on the screen when your character has randomly used that skill, like "Slash: x damage"
