What intermediate format(s) are you using? Can you post the .blend file?

I suppose I should have been more specific. I was hoping for one that included the texture.
Anyway, the main reasons the mesh looks so bad are
1. really bad UV map, with tons of seams and inconsistent size
2. haphazard, probably unintended mix of smooth and flat shading
I tried to make a cleaned up version with a more sensible UV map; here it is:

This version has smooth shading; you might want to bevel the edges to improve lighting behaviour.

Okay - because I'm on a holidaytrip now just a quick response: thank you both.
Model seems to be good now. Will have a closer look when I'm back. Very kind to do this, minmay.
Isaac, thanks for the links. I've tried to learn with tutorials and will go on with this - but Blender is a headscratcher...
