[Steam] Stuck on "Performing first-time setup..."

Hi,

when trying to start the game a small window opens which says "Performing first-time setup..." and "Installing Microsoft VC Redist Package (step 1 of 3)", but there does not seem to be any progress. It is stuck on that part for more than 20 minutes now.

The compatibility test worked just fine.

I am on a Macbook Air (2014) running Windows 8.1 64bit natively. Graphics drivers are up to date.

That's weird, I would imagine the issue would have popped up with the compatibility test since it had the same installation steps. My first suggestion is to redownload the installer and trying it again.

Alright, installing DirectX manually from the game folder and restarting steam somehow solved it (edit:once)! Not sure of the cause and effect chain here.

edit: wait, not getting back in again!

Bck from where I started, I only managed to start it once. It still wants to perfom the 3 step setup when i try to launch.

To be fair, I've seen these sorts of issues on and off with Steam at random intervals. I expect it's a Steam issue as opposed to a game specific issue. It seems to happen a lot more on OSX and/or if you're signed up to the Steam beta releases!

Mine was stuck for awhile (by awhile I mean like 5 minutes?) as well, but eventually proceeded to 2 and 3.

Aye John, that's possible .. best is to make sure the installed Steam Client is the latest available.

Okay, I have a reproducible solution now.

When starting the game it is still stuck on step 1 of 3 of the first time setup. But when I simultaneously try to verify the steam game files in the options WITHOUT closing the small window it suddenly starts!
