I'm sure this question has been covered somewhere else in the forums so apologies if it has. I was wondering if it's possible to buy the game as a gift for someone else and if so, how do I do it?

Certainly! I think all the vendors we have support gift purchases.
For example in our store ( http://www.grimrock.net/store/ ), you just need to tick the checkbox labeled as "purchase as a gift" and then put your own email address in. You will then get a mail to that address with a gift URL that you can then send to your friend any way you want: via email, IM, postcard etc.
